Kabwares Little Parcels | Etzcetera Magazine

Kim from Etczetera Magazine recently ordered a couple of Plant Labels from us to give to her parents over Easter.

As always Kim came up with a great idea to package her gifts and she popped a tutorial on her blog recently to show how she did it

We’ve reposted it here to share with all of you- wouldn’t this be a great way to present your Mothers Day Plant Labels this year.

Here’s Kim’s Tutorial

As usual, I left things til the last minute and with just 30 minutes before we headed to my parents for Easter I decided to make some paper pockets to wrap the plant labels in. And here’s a how-to quick tutorial.

You will need:

    • Baking paper
    • Patterned paper scraps
    • ribbon offcuts – ric rac, trim etc
    • Any embellishments you want to include
    • access to a sewing machine OR hand stitch if you have some extra time.

one

Start by cutting your baking paper to size. You could use a patterned paper but I like the translucent look of the baking paper, hinting at what’s inside but not quite showing the contents.

I found it easier to cut one piece of baking paper and fold it in half, rather than try and juggle two strips of baking paper when it comes time to machine stitch the sides.
two

Fold your baking paper in half, long ways and make sure your crease is nice and sharp.

Start gathering strips of patterned paper, book paper, graph paper – whatever you have on hand. I had such limited time I just rifled around in my box of scraps and used offcut pieces.

We only need to decorate the front of the pocket parcel. Use double sided tape to secure your strips and hold them in place until you head to your sewing machine. Trim off any excess.

three

I’ve used a contrasting black thread for one of my pockets and just white thread for the other one. Stitch all your strips and pieces down nice and securely. Messy stitch – it’s fun and adds a unique look.

four

Don’t stitch down some of the wider strips completely..use your scissors to cut some fringing which gives some dimension and texture.

five

I’ve also stitched a trail of punched mini paper butterflies + more fringing on a couple of strips of graph paper.

six

Check that your plant labels fit nicely and that you have some extra length at the top to fold over to seal up your pocket envelopes. Head to the sewing machine again and stitch along the side and bottom of your pocket, leaving the top open.

seven

Slip your plant labels inside and fold over the top edge, sealing with a round sticker. I have used the Heidi Swapp verb stickers.

I added a few creme Easter eggs as well.

And your little pocket envelopes are ready!!

Issue 5 of Etczetera Magazine is out now……….

and you can buy back issues here!

let us know if you have a go!

Open for Business

Hi there!

We are back from our little break and feeling all the better for it too.

During the time away we were subjected to views like this

I know, I know- how hard to take LOL.

Along with beautiful water views, fishing and swimming at the beach  we were able to visit a farm too- great for the KABkids to experience a bit of life on the land!

so, now that we have returned our Made It store is open again, and we have also just gone live with a new store at the very lovely

Down That Little Lane

(click the image above for a direct link to our store)

Down That Little Lane is the most gorgeous online retail store- go and have a peak around. One of my favourite things about it is that you can create your own wishlists to share with friends- what a perfect way to let everyone know what you would like for your birthday- or even use it as a Wedding registry- love it!!

Click here to read more about their story

so, with Mothers Day Fast approaching, dont forget we have our very special Mothers Day Plant Labels- now available at both our Online Stores!

see you ’round

cheers

Jane

Easter Break

The stars and moons have combined to give Mr. Kab some time off from his day job this week, so we have decided to take the opportunity to spend some uninterrupted time with the Kabkids.

Apologies for the short notice, however as is the nature of our business, we sometimes have to grab the opportunities presented and run with them!

I will popping the Made It shop into holiday mode at some stage tonight- and will reopen shortly after Easter.

Happy Easter to everyone

cheers

Jane

Anna

On the 18th of March 2012, my friend, who meant so much to so many, passed away after a dreadful battle with cancer.

Anna was diagnosed with a brain tumor on the eve of her eldest starting Primary School in January 2008- a milestone she had been so completely looking forward to- and the diagnosis changed everything for her, her family and all of us who knew her……

(Anna and I with babies #2- 2004)

I met Anna and her hubby when Al and I headed off to pre-natal classes for our first born just over 10 years ago. We discovered we lived in the same suburb, so exchanged phone numbers and had a few chats before our girls arrived. ( I remember she told me she wanted 4 children- i thought she was nuts and probably told her so LOL).  Al and I were first with Chloe, and 3 days later Tara arrived, so we were both in hospital learning how to care for our newborns at the same time.

A few months later we started Mothers Group together and for the next 5 years saw each other at least once or twice a week. Our second children were born 3 months apart in 2004.

(she loved a good party, and this was a ripper- a friends wedding 2008- 7 months after diagnosis)

Last Friday at her service  we listened to  incredible speeches from 2 of her sisters and 2 friends she had known since primary school-they spoke of the Anna we all knew well (her love of cooking and throwing a party was legendary- as our frined  Helen mentioned, you didnt need breakfast when you were going to Anna’s for Mothers Group get togethers LOL). Her brave almost 10 year old Tara stood at the entrance of the Chapel before the service with a picture of her mum supported by her school friends that included our almost 10yr old Chloe.

And a slideshow 3 songs long with photo after photo of the extremely photogenic Anna was a poignant reminder to get the camera out often and include yourself in those pics too!

While Anna’s service showed us how Anna had lived her life, and made everyone laugh and cry,  it was her burial service that gave me some sense of peace. Anna is Chinese, and the rituals performed at the cemetery by her mum and aunts were so deeply respectful and beautiful I will forever be  grateful and honoured to have been a part of it.

(blinged up- at the same wedding)

This is just my own story of Anna- one of her greatest strengths was her ability to gather good friends – and there are so many people who have their own stories of Anna to remember too.

Hopefully one day there will be a cure to this insidious disease- it cant come too soon. There are many charities you can donate to to help cancer research- so if you have one you would like to contribute too- please do. I’m hoping in the coming months to help with some fundraising through Kabwares, and will let you know the details  at another time.

For now, Anna

Seeee yaaaaaaa

OOOOPS…..

A couple of weeks ago, I set up a little photoshoot for our Mothers Day Plant Labels.

I had found a very cute container made from an old olive oil tin, and thought a couple of pots of colour planted into the container would look lovely- so I trotted off to our local nursery and came home with some very pretty and sweet smelling Alyssum- PERFECT!

Once the photos were done, the container was left  on our outdoor table to admire each time we went out into the backyard.

A couple of days and a mini heatwave  later the plants were in need of a drink, so I popped the container onto our back deck to water them. Unfortunately, I forgot to put it back onto the table before the chickens were let out for the day…….

BIG MISTAKE!

It appears that to a hungry chicken or two, an alyssum plant is irresistible.

OOPS!

Who can blame them though…if you have ever brushed an Alyssum plant on a hot day,  you would know that the scent is sweet, and reminiscent of honey…..mmmmm, yum!

I’m pleased to report that although cut back almost completely the Alyssum plants  are now on their way to recovery (and will probably look better than ever).

Have you ever had a pet (or a person) almost destroy a plant you loved?

Etzcetera Magazine and Mothers Day…

The 1st of March means a brand spanking new addition of the fabulous crafty lifestyle online magazine  Etzcetera.

This quarter, the magazine features a plethora of crafty and gift  ideas for Easter and Mothers Day…..and I’m happy to say Kabwares is included in their Mothers Day gift guide.

Our Mothers Day Plant Labels are now available in our Made It store- for more information click on this link (or the Mothers Day 2012 link in the sidebar).

To purchase the latest copy of Etzcetera Magazine, click on this link here- if you would like a sample of what Etzcetera is all about- their first issue is still available for free here- and it features yours truly-the Kabwares team- and how we got started.

shopping…..

As well as hanging around at home with the KABkids, we have done a little Op shopping…..we were on a mission for spoons mainly, although with the KABkids tagging along  I’ve found that I need to budget a little extra -they have scored books, toys and games in the past week, helping fight the holiday ‘what am I going to doooooo…….s’

We also unexpectedly brought home 2 Malvern Star bikes in pretty good nick-  Ive learnt over the years that if you see a bargain you grab it- wont be there next time!!

The other thing I love to keep my eye out for are classic crochet books-while the fashions may have changed (see below hehehe)  the stitch patterns can always be used for something a little more (cough) 21st century.

Have a great week!

we’re baaack…

Just a quick hello to say Kabwares is now open for business .

We are back taking orders for 2012, however, the KABkids are still on school holidays, so please dont panic if I dont answer an email promtly- I am playing Entertainment secretary as well!!

Here is to a great year- looking forward to sharing it with you.

cheers

Jane
